Markets rise half a percent as FPIs raise stake in HDFC Bank

Benchmark indices jumped near their respective 5-month highs after gains in key private banks HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank supported sentiments.

HDFC Bank shares zoomed after RBI removed the bank shares from foreign portfolio investment (FPI) ban list as the aggregate foreign shareholding had dipped below prescribed limits. The stock pared its gains after RBI restored the ban as the foreign investment ceiling of 74% was breached again.

Among NSE benchmarks, indices representing Pharma and financial counters topped the list. IT counters were under selling pressure.

Globally, US, Asian and European markets were mostly in red.

Back home, the market breadth on the BSE closed in positive. Advancing and declining stocks were 1495 and 1467 respectively, while 228 scrips remained unmoved.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 28468.75, up 167.48 points or 0.59%. The 30 share index touched a high and a low of 28726.26 and 28410.91 respectively. 15 stocks advanced against 15 declining ones on the benchmark index.

The Nifty 50 gained 43.70 points or 0.50% to settle at 8821.70. The index touched high and low of 8896.45 and 8804.25 respectively. 28 stocks advanced against 22 declining ones on the index.


S&P BSE Sensex

The S&P BSE Mid-cap index moved up to 13422.89 and gained 0.53% while S&P BSE Small-cap index jumped up by 0.40% to 13467.64.

The broader S&P BSE 500 index increased to 12068.00 (up 0.51%) and Nifty 500 index rose to 7638.00 (up 0.51%).

The volatility as denoted by INDIA VIX lost 2.18% at 13.43 from its previous close of 13.73 on Thursday.

Sectors in action

On the BSE Sectorial front, Healthcare (up 1.64%), Oil & Gas (up 1.38%), Finance (up 1.24%), Banks (up 1.21%) and Energy (up 1.07%) were the top gainers.

Information Technology (down 1.02%), Technology, Media & Telecom (down 0.86%), Metals (down 0.68%), Telecom (down 0.30%) and Consumer Discretionary (down 0.14%) were the top losers.

The Angels and the Devils

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (up 4.03%), HDFC Bank (up 3.75%), Cipla Ltd (up 1.58%), Tata Motors Ltd (up 1.53%) and ICICI Bank (up 1.52%) were the top gainers on the Sensex.

Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (down 1.58%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd (down 1.29%), Infosys Ltd (down 1.21%), Wipro Ltd (down 1.10%) and Asian Paints (India) Ltd (down 0.91%) were the top losers on the Sensex.

Benchmark Drivers

HDFC Bank (94.58 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (28.61 points), ICICI Bank (28.20 points), Infosys Ltd (-23.93 points) and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (-21.76 points) were the major Sensex drivers today.

On the other end HDFC Bank (23.74 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (7.29 points), ICICI Bank (7.09 points), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (-6.83 points) and Infosys Ltd (-5.99 points) were the major Nifty movers today.

Pivot, Supports and Resistance Levels

Nifty 50 is now pivoted at 8841 for next session. The next support is at 8785 and on upside it has a resistance at 8877 levels.
