Nifty snaps record making streak; IT & Bank counters drag Sensex 130 pts down

Tracking global weakness, Indian markets started in red and stayed in negative zone throughout the day. Cautious traders resorted to profit booking as current levels were unseen in past. Among NSE benchmarks Nifty IT (down 1.14%) stood as top laggard. Rupee (INR) appreciation due to fresh dumping of US Dollar by exporters & banks dented sentiments for IT counters.

Globally, US markets mostly closed lower on Friday. Asian markets traded mixed on Monday whereas European markets were trading in red.

Back home, with a view to roll out the ambitious indirect tax reform from July 1, Union Cabinet approved four legislations out of five sent to it by GST council in last week ahead of their introduction in Parliament this week.

On stock specific front, Idea Cellular tanked 9.6% after company board approved the merger of Vodafone India and its subsidiary Vodafone Mobile Services with the company.

The market breadth on the BSE closed in negative. Advancing and declining stocks were 1453 and 1556 respectively, while 214 scrips remained unmoved.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 29518.74, down 130.25 points or 0.44%. The 30 share index touched a high and a low of 29699.48 and 29482.40 respectively. 15 stocks advanced against 15 declining ones on the benchmark index.

The Nifty 50 lost 33.20 points or 0.36% to settle at 9126.85. The index touched high and low of 9167.60 and 9116.30 respectively. 23 stocks advanced against 27 declining ones on the index.

The S&P BSE Mid-cap index moved up to 13916.79 and gained 0.17% while S&P BSE Small-cap index jumped up by 0.30% to 14054.99.

The broader S&P BSE 500 index decreased to 12507.67 (down 0.14%) and Nifty 500 index declined to 7918.60 (down 0.18%).

The volatility as denoted by INDIA VIX gained 1.43% at 12.02 from its previous close of 11.85 on Friday.

Sectors in action

On the BSE Sectorial front, Consumer Durables (up 1.03%), Healthcare (up 0.44%), Consumer Discretionary (up 0.26%), Real Estate (up 0.25%) and FMCG (up 0.21%) were the top gainers.

Information Technology (down 1.36%), Technology, Media & Telecom (down 1.23%), Telecom (down 1.11%), Energy (down 0.75%) and Oil & Gas (down 0.52%) were the top losers.

The Angels and the Devils

NTPC Ltd (up 0.87%), Bharti Airtel Ltd (up 0.76%), Coal India Ltd (up 0.76%), HDFC Bank (up 0.63%) and Lupin Ltd (up 0.62%) were the top gainers on the Sensex.

Axis Bank (down 2.41%), ICICI Bank (down 1.99%), Infosys Ltd (down 1.87%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (down 1.82%) and Wipro Ltd (down 1.59%) were the top losers on the Sensex.


Pivot, Supports and Resistance Levels

Nifty 50 is now pivoted at 9137 for next session. The next support is at 9106 and on upside it has a resistance at 9158 levels.
