Sensex edged 57 pts lower; Realty continued to outperform other benchmarks

After pausing for a day, the benchmark indices resumed the losing streak to end the week on pessimistic note. HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries stood as the saviors and contained the losses in ITC and Sun Pharma.

Globally, US markets settled upbeat on Thursday overnight tracking encouraging corporate earnings reports and payroll data. Asian markets too mirrored the gains in Wall Street. European markets were also trading mostly in green ahead of first round of French presidential election.

Back home, India’s private banking giant HDFC Bank closed 2.4% up after reporting 18.25% y-o-y rise in its net profit at Rs 3990 cr. Gross NPA for the bank stood flat at 1.05% on q-o-q basis.

Among NSE benchmarks Nifty Realty (up 2.4%) continued the bullish momentum and topped the charts. Nifty FMCG (down 1.1%) stood at the bottom.

The market breadth on the BSE closed in positive. Advancing and declining stocks were 1507 and 1469 respectively, while 174 scrips remained unmoved.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 29365.30, down 57.09 points or 0.19%. The 30 share index touched a high and a low of 29584.34 and 29259.42 respectively. 6 stocks advanced against 24 declining ones on the benchmark index.

The Nifty 50 lost 17.00 points or 0.19% to settle at 9119.40. The index touched high and low of 9183.65 and 9088.75 respectively. 15 stocks advanced against 35 declining ones on the index.

The S&P BSE Mid-cap index moved up to 14487.92 and gained 0.02% while S&P BSE Small-cap index jumped up by 0.25% to 15166.31.

The broader S&P BSE 500 index decreased to 12729.13 (down 0.10%) and Nifty 500 index declined to 8057.70 (down 0.07%).

The volatility as denoted by INDIA VIX lost 1.21% at 11.42 from its previous close of 11.56 on Thursday.

Sectors in action

On the BSE Sectorial front, Real Estate (up 2.37%), Energy (up 0.75%), Telecom (up 0.75%), Utilities (up 0.31%) and Power (up 0.28%) were the top gainers.

FMCG (down 0.97%), Healthcare (down 0.76%), Metals (down 0.59%), Basic Materials (down 0.47%) and Automobile (down 0.41%) were the top losers.

The Angels and the Devils

NTPC Ltd (up 2.42%), HDFC Bank (up 2.41%), Reliance Industries Ltd (up 2.28%), Bharti Airtel Ltd (up 0.63%) and Larsen And Toubro Ltd (up 0.43%) were the top gainers on the Sensex.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (down 2.31%), ITC Ltd (down 1.90%), Cipla Ltd (down 1.61%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (down 1.60%) and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (down 1.49%) were the top losers on the Sensex.


Pivot, Supports and Resistance Levels

Nifty 50 is now pivoted at 9131 for next session. The next support is at 9078 and on upside it has a resistance at 9172 levels.
